Hangul is the Korean alphabet, which has received much recognition from linguists around the world.
Korea celebrates the creation of Hangul on October 9.
Hangul was invented by the Great King Sejong in the 15th century during the Chosun Dynasty.
King Sejong is one of the greatest monarchs of Korea who was known to be wise, smart, a scientist, and an inventor.
If you have visited Seoul, you probably have seen his sculpture in Gwanghwamun Square.
During his rule, the Korean people used Chinese characters as written language.
Chinese characters was only used by the elite and it was very difficult for commoners to use.
King Sejong wanted his people to have their own language, an alphabet that could be learned
and read by everyone, so created an alphabet made of 28 characters.
The characters were created to show the shape of the mouth when pronouncing those characters.
With the creation of Hangul, many people including were able to learn the alphabet, read the alphabet, and write the alphabet.
It broke down many barriers between classes and women.
The Korean alphabet that we see today, is a little different from the original characters that were created,
but the shape remains the same.
