The season for Kimjang!
It's getting colder and colder, and it means it’s time for kimjang! What is kimjang? It is a Korean tradition of making and preserving kimchee to eat throughout the year! In 2013, the tradition was listed as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage!
Kimchee is usually consumed quite frequently in Korea, in many households you will see it on the dining table every meal.
Before the cold of winter comes around, it is a tradition for families to get together and make loads of different types of kimchee! It is not only for the preservation purposes but it is a family event! Much of the family, usually the women, get together to do kimjang. In the past, kimjang kimchee used to be shared with neighbors and friends. This tradition of sharing kimchee is still practiced.
Once the kimchee is made, traditionally it use to be stored underground. However, these days, there is the convenience of a kimchee refrigerator! With a kimchee refrigerator you can store the kimchee for months and months!
With the kimchee that is made on kimjang day, the family usually has a feast! Foods that go well with the freshly made kimchee are cooked and eaten. Guests are also invited to the house to enjoy together!
We hope you have the experience in participating in kimjang or at least taste kimjang kimchee!
