The First Step toward Yeonsu as a Cultural City
The establishment of the Yeonsu Cultural Foundation was first planned in 2018.
It took about five months of preparation
to review the feasibility of opening the Foundation.
Yeonsu-gu organized public hearings to persuade attendees regarding
the orientation and purpose of the Foundation.
After this process, in December 2019, the Yeonsu Cultural
Foundation was finally presented to Yeonsu-gu residents.
The Yeonsu Cultural Foundation is ready to develop the
cultural resources of Yeonsu-gu in line with its regional characteristics.
Yeonsu Cultural City, a Future Full of Culture
On February 24, Yeonsu-gu and the Yeonsu Cultural
Foundation were finally selected for the 2020
Local Culture Consulting Competition hosted by
the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
The Local Culture Consulting
Support Project supports local governments, local cultural
foundations, and universities to provide adequate policies
through comprehensive consulting for regional development.
Through this project, Ongnyeon-dong, one of the old
representative city centers in Yeonsu-gu, will be established
as a cultural village, and various policies will promote artists,
activities and enrich its residents, cultural lives.
Yeonsu Cultural City, Unfolding New Culture
The Yeonsu Cultural Foundation has focused on three areas
to design and develop the unique culture of Yeonsu-gu.
The first step is to create a cultural city.
The Cultural City Team is planning and
promoting a preparatory project to support
Yeonsu-gu’s application for the Cultural City Designation
Project implemented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
By June of this year, the team will establish the
Yeonsu-gu Cultural City Creation Plan and is devoting efforts to
prepare for the Cultural City Designation Project application.
Also, by operating the Cultural City Promotion Committee
centered on citizen participation, Yeonsu Culture Forum,
City Culture Academy, and Yeonsu Youth Culture Living Lab
Support Project, the Foundation completed plans to make
Yeonsu-gu a cultural city created with its citizens.
Another direction of focus for the Foundation is
the vitalization of sustainable living culture
for Yeonsu-gu residents.
The Living Culture Team established plans to
rearrange cultural spaces in Yeonsu-gu
so that residents’ lives can naturally connect with culture and arts.
Yeonsu-gu’s cultural spaces, such as the
Azalea Living Culture Center, Gallery Yeonsu, and Chunghak
Culture Center, offer a variety of courses that
enable residents to interact more closely
with culture and arts in their daily lives.
The team is also planning to lay the foundation for the
Neungheodae Culture Festival, which will be a cultural
community festival that unites residents by having them
participate together.
Lastly, the Foundation expects to enrich
the culture and art projects of Yeonsu-gu.
The culture and art support projects
consist of Art Expression Activity Support,
Art Festival Support, Youth Art Planning Support,
and Living Culture Presentation Support to promote
the creative activities of local artists and residents.
The Foundation has also prepared the Friday Art Stage,
scheduled to be held at Yeonsu Art Hall,
to present performances in more diverse ways
like contests or planned performances.
In addition, the Saturday Culture Hanmadang
will provide an opportunity for residents
both in the old city center and new towns
to enjoy high-quality performing arts.
Small “traveling performances” will also continue.
The Foundation plans to actively carry out
international exchange projects based on
the regional characteristics and current issues of Yeonsu-gu.
Following The Songdo Cruise Fireworks Festival in 2019,
The Incheon Songdo Fireworks Festival (tentative name)
will be presented along with Incheon Port
Authority in the Incheon International Cruise Terminal area.
