Important Korean Holidays

Independence Movement Day (March 1)

 

March 1 is Independence Movement Day. Independence Movement Day was held on March 1, 1919, when Korea issued the Declaration of Independence while under Japanese colonial rule, to let the world know the will of Korea's independence. It is with this momentum that the people of Korea vowed that they independence would be achieved.

 

 

Memorial Day

 

June 6 is Memorial Day, a day where we remember those who died for our country. On this day, we remember many of the Patriotic martyrs of the Korean War. However, the day also remembers all the sacrifices and lives lost while protecting their country.

 

 

National Liberation Day

 

 August 15 is National Liberation Day, a day to celebrate Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule and to celebrate the establishment of the Republic of Korea government in 1948. On this day, celebrations and performances will be held throughout the country.

 

 

National Foundation Day of Korea

 

October 3 is National Foundation Day. National Foundation Day in Korea is called “Gaecheonjeol” which means the sky is open. On October 3, 2333 BC, Gojoseon, the first kingdom in Korean Peninsula, was established.

 

Hangul proclamation day

 

October 9 is Hangeul Day. This is the day Korean people celebrate the creation of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong.  It is widely celebrated with events throughout Korea.
