'Smoking' and 'Dementia'

Yeonsu-gu Public Health Center gets two birds with one stone

Yeonsu-gu dreams of becoming a city of health, and Yeonsu-gu Public Health Center stands as the guardian of the citizen health. It is carrying out many projects and campaigns to create a health-friendly city. Among them, the ‘Quit-smoking Clinic’ and the ‘Dementia Clinic’ are receiving warm responses from the people of Yeonsu-gu.

 The Quit-smoking Clinic

To help people quit smoking, the Quit-smoking Clinic of Yeonsu-gu provides a number of different therapies. “As of 2013, 3,504 people had registered with the clinic. Among them, 94% succeeded in not smoking for four weeks.” Consultants at the clinic say that such a high success rate is the fruit of on-going management.

During the first consulting session for someone who wishes to quit smoking, the consultants determine the person’s will to quit. Then, the consultants evaluate the person’s dependency on nicotine and decide on the best method to quit smoking, be it nicotine patches, gum, candies, or bands, to help them quit. The consulting session is provided once a week, up to the seven sessions. By using the most appropriate nicotine substitutes combined with behavioral therapy people are able to restrain from smoking. Even without the supplements, the temptation to smoke disappears in time.

For smokers who have difficulty visiting the clinic, consultants even provide house calls. Upon request from a company or a group of more than 20 who wish to quit smoking, a consultant will visit once a week for six weeks to help manage them. In addition, the ‘Quit-smoking Program for Youth’ has been operated since last year with the help of oriental medical agencies and schools. Through this program, the clinic is striving to improve the health of its youths during their formative years.

 General Dementia Management Center

Everyone hopes to lead a healthy life, both physically and mentally, before dying a comfortable death. Dementia is a disease that breaks down the mind. It is cruel not only for the patient, but also for the families. Issues related to dementia reach beyond the boundaries of home and are becoming social issues.
Opened in 2011, the ‘Yeonsu-gu General Dementia Management Center’ works with Gachon University to provide general management for dementia, from early examination to treatment. Dementia is a chronic disease, so the center provides services for each stage of the disease, aiming to prevent it from entering the most severe stages and reducing its prevalence. Examinations are made by consultation. After the examination, the patients are divided into the normal group, high risk group, and declined recognition group. For patients with declined recognition, thorough examination and treatment are provided with other services in connection with long-term care insurance. The center also supports the expenses for treating and managing dementia, and operates house call services for the patients, step-by-step programs, meetings and self-support groups for the patients’ families, dental care services, and a happy café (a free café where patients and their families can enjoy tea, nail art, go and other games).
