In 1883, Joseon (Korea’s name during the Joseon Dynasty) opened its ports to foreign trade.
Before this, Joseon was known for keeping its doors closed to foreigners, however once the
ports were open, foreigners from different countries started to come into Joseon.
As foreigners started to increase natural deaths of foreigners in Korea also started to increase.
There were people that did not send the deceased back to their home country, rather buried
them near their residence in Joseon. This is why a cemetery for foreigners was created.
At first, the foreigner’s cemetery were located in Yulmok-dong, Dohaw-dong, Bukdong-dong.
In 1965, they were moved to Cheonghak-dong
Currently, there are 59 graves from 11 countries
which include 21 British, 14 American, 7 Russian, and 6 German.
Although this may not be a place where many people visit,
it is a unique part of the history of Korea.
