Continuing the practice of Yeonsu-gu civil servants’
small sum donation campaign
Is everyone spending a warm 2014? Maybe due to the cold winter weather, the donation culture has been spreading throughout the country. However, many people think of large sums when the word "donation"is used and feels uncomfortable with the donation culture.
In actuality, however, the amount does not matter. Just as small droplets combine to form large rivers and oceans, small acts can come together to provide a warm winter for many people.
Therefore, the Yeonsu-gu civil servants have continued to spread the "An armful of happiness through an hour of sharing"donation campaign that assists families that are in the community’s welfare dead zone through the small amount donation institution.
According to Yeonsu-gu, Yeonsu-gu’s civil servants have taken the initiative for the growth of the public office community’s donation culture by donating each month an hour’s worth of overtime pay per official rank through the Community Chest of Korea.
Thus, Yeonsu-gu has been providing assistance related to living expenses, housing expenses, heating bills, insurance payments, and unpaid public utility charges, etc. upon receiving requests from low income, near poverty families residing within the district.
Through the "An armful of happiness through an hour of sharing" campaign, Yeonsu-gu has provided approximately 90 million won for 140 families since 2008 and has alleviated the financial difficulties of local residents.
Yeonsu-gu officials have stated, "While it may be individually small amounts, the combined efforts and dedication have provided considerable help toward the less fortunate neighbors" and that "the sharing culture have spread and relieved the welfare dead zone."
Currently, at the end of December, more than 50% of Yeonsu-gu’s civil servants are participating in the "An armful of happiness through an hour of sharing" campaign and Yeonsu-gu plans to actively promote the campaign for increased participation.
