YEONSU, FROM PAST TO PRESENT
In 1987, the appearance of Yeonsu-gu began to change
completely with the aim to guarantee an ample supply
of housing for ordinary citizens and an organized urban
development plan. The plan started with the project to
develop the land around Yeonsu-dong, Cheonghak-dong,
Dongchun-dong, and Seonhak-dong into residential
areas. Apartments were built on these sites and became
occupied in 1991 starting with Sunhak-dong. As schools,
welfare centers, and other urban infrastructures were
established one after another, the former rural areas
completely transformed into the new cities. The population
grew rapidly; in 1994, when the land development project
was completed, the population of Nam-gu, including
this area, reached nearly 580,000. The city of Incheon has
separated the developed area from Nam-gu to create a
new district, Yeonsu-gu. On March 1, 1995, the southern
district of Munhaksan Mountain was separated from Namgu,
and Yeonsu-gu, a new city, was born. Yeonsu-gu, which
initially had five legal dongs and eight administrative dongs
in its administration, has seen increases in the number of
people into new or divided dongs, and has six legal dongs
and 14 administrative dongs in its administration.
SONGDO, THE SPRINGBOARD OF YEONSU INTO THE WORLD
Songdo is a land created by reclaiming tide flats in
Dongchun-dong, Yeonsu-gu. Songdo's first phase for
urban development was in 1989, when the residential
land development was in full swing. Since the landfill
plan was officially approved, the landfill construction
began in September 1994. Songdo, which had been
transformed from tide flats into an area with facilities, was
designated as the first Economic Free Zone in Korea with
Yeongjong and Cheongna in 2003. As development and
attraction progressed, the name was changed to Songdo
International City. Consistent with this name, Songdo has
been developed focusing on business IT·BT, such as the
International Business District, Knowledge and Information
Industrial Complex, Bio Complex, and High-tech
Industrial Cluster. Songdo has more than 15 international
organizations, including domestic and foreign global
corporations, the Green Climate Fund Secretariat, and
the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development
(UNOSD). In addition, as the transportation and living
infrastructure improved, it became a self-sufficient city rich
in residential, business, and commercial facilities
