ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS BECOMING SELECTED AS A WOMEN-FRIENDLY CITY

The interviews on the previous

pages are dramatized interviews

of women who benefited

from Yeonsu-gu implementing

measures to secure their safety

and build a female-friendly city.

The initiative was developed to

not only create a womenfriendly city,

but also help people

from vulnerable backgrounds

lead safer and happier lives.

The women-friendly city project,

led by the Ministry

of Gender Equality and Family,

has a five-year selection cycle.

Yeonsu-gu was originally

selected in 2013.

The Ministry, however,

declined to select

Yeonsu-gu in 2018.

In response,

Yeonsu-gu initiated a variety

of policies to make sure of

its selection in the next cycle.

Specifically,

it has detailed plans to execute

30 projects across

five different categories

by 2020 to better facilitate

and accommodate women

in Yeonsu-gu.

Key projects include

the Citizen’s Action Group,

expert consulting sessions

and lectures,

and other initiatives to build a safe city.

In addition to the safety mirrors

installed across Hambak Village,

Yeonsu-gu installed logo lights

(light features with

embedded messages)

and safety signs help secure

the safety of women returning home.

Furthermore,

Yeonsu-gu has plans to

offer afterschool classes,

and establish an environment

in which women can achieve

a better work-life balance.
