Korean Independence Day 70th Anniversary



Celebrating the 70th Independence Day,

various benefits are offered on account of the 14th being a provisional national holiday 



The upcoming August 15th is Korea’s Independence Day, which celebrates Korea’s national independence from Japanese colonization in 1945 as well as the establishment of the Korean government in 1948. Especially, this year’s Independence Day is meaningful since it marks its 70th anniversary.


Therefore, the government, as a measure to stir morale of the public, has declared August 14th as a provisional national holiday so that people can enjoy various benefits. Today, we will introduce the various benefits that are available on this national holiday.

 

1. Naeilro 50% Discount



Starting from August 8th to the 31st, Naeilro passes will be discounted by 50%. Naeilro is a pass that offers unlimited access to all domestic train rides, with the exception of KTX, and is available for anyone under the age of 28. With the discount, Naeilro passes will be available at \28,300(originally \56,500) and \31,400(originally \62,700) for 5 day and 7 day passes, respectively. If you have not gone on a vacation yet, the Naeilro pass will be a great choice for traveling.

 


2. Palace opens with free entrance



For 3 days from August 14th to 16th, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Jongmyo Shrine, major Chosun Dynasty Royal Tombs, 41 National Recreational Forests, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art will be open with no entrance fees. This would be a great experience of re-discovering Korea on its Independence Day.

 


3. Tolls on all domestic roads and highways are exempt



On the 14th, all tolls on domestic roads, including highways, will be exempt. Toll collection systems on Highpass lanes will be adjusted to not collect any fees. It would serve as an opportunity to travel around the country.

 


4. Incheon City temporarily removes Selective Car-Free-Days policy



Incheon City, in an effort to spread the celebratory mood of the 70th anniversary and to actively participate in the government’s effort to boost domestic consumption and vitalize the economy, has decided to temporarily lift the Selective Car-Free-Days policy on August 14th. The Selective Car-Free-Days policy promotes drivers to voluntarily select a certain day of the week and abstain from driving on that day while attaching an electronic tag that indicates the day. The policy allows the mayor, in accordance with municipal ordinance, to assign a special day and suspend enforcement
