Labor Day (May day)



Labor Day has started to improve conditions of labor and positions of blue collar workers.  Labor Day in Korea is May 1st and is recognized around the world as the International Worker’s Day or Labor Day.

In Korea, May 1st is called Labor Day, and Korea started recognizing this day in 1923 by the Korean Federation of Labor Unions.  The first known celebration of Labor day was actually in 1891 in the US. Now in the United States Labor Day is celebrated in September.

 


After World War 2, labor a day event had been hosted by the Korean trade union council. As of 1958, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions took over and set the Labor Day as same day with their foundation date Mar. 10th. In 1964, it was officially recognized by the government and Labor Day was set into law as May 1.

 


On March 9,1994, Labor Day become an recognized holiday in Korea. In celebration of this day, there are many government organized events and ceremonies to recognize the blue collar workers of Korea.

 

Labor Day is meant to motivate workers and recognize the hard work that their hard work. Labor Day is a very special holiday that is meant to recognize the hardships of the countries workers. We hope this Labor Day, you are able to reflect on the true meaning of this day.
