“It seems like yesterday when I was crazy about the La Liga, but now I am working at the Spanish Embassy in Korea!”
At the 5th UNESCO International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC), Volunteer Hye-bin Kim (23), general manager of volunteer Spanish interpreters, plays an important role for Spanish-speaking VIPs during this event.
At this conference, whenever international officials from Central and South America, including Mexico, enter Korea, she personally meets at the airport and helps with the protocol. She also played the role of guiding the COVID-19 PCR test at the public health center and checking in at the hotel, and was responsible for helping the participants without any inconvenience in preparing for the event.
After graduating from Duksung Women's University with Spanish major, while applying for graduate school, she happened to see an ICLC Spanish volunteer interpreter recruitment notice on the graduate school website and applied.
In Korea, there are hardly any volunteer Spanish interpreters, so she informed her acquaintances and participated in this event together.
When she was in her second year of high school, she was interested in the Spanish football league, the La Liga, and started studying Spanish on her own.
Now, she was currently hired by the Spanish Embassy in Korea and is waiting for a permanent position.
“A total of 20 people applied and I was the only one who got the job. They were looking things that required knowledge about Spain in general, such as Spanish culture knowledge, work skills, translation, and interviewing. If you dig into something passionately, I think good results will come.”
She is also interested in various global agendas such as the recent climate crisis and infectious diseases. This is because, in an era where cooperation between countries is important, and she wants to grow into a world-class talent and help Korea.
“As ICLC is an international event on a global scale, it was a good opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork through organic connection between organizations. I think this event will be very helpful as I continue to plan on the international level in the future.”
