Gwangbokjeol

August 15 is

the National Liberation Day

of Korea.

 

It is a day that is commemorated

in both the North and the South.

 

This day celebrates the day

that Korea was able to

get its independence

by after it had been occupied

by Japan for decades.

 

In Korea it is called Gwangbokjeol,

and is a national holiday

observed throughout the peninsula.

 

On this day,

there are many events

and activities that take place.

You will notice the Korean flag

flying from lampposts

throughout the streets.

 

Commercial buildings and

homes are also encourage

to display the Korean flag

on this day.

 

Gwangbokjeol is the one

of the very few holidays

that North Korea

and South Korea share.

 

It is a day people remember

and celebrate those who fought

and died for Korea’s independence.

 

All government offices are closed

to observe this holiday

as well as banks and post office.
