If you are in Korea for the first time, or living here, you may be curious to know who is on the Korean currency! Here is some information on the people featured and also a little Korean history lesson!

 

■ 100 won - Admiral Yi Soon Shin

 

Admiral Yi Soon Shin, is considered one of the best generals of the Joseon Dynasty. He was a general who fought against Japanese forces during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Among Admiral Yi's wars, famous wars include the Battle of Hansando, Battle of Myeongnyang, and Battle of Noryang.

 

■ 1,000 won - Toegye Yi-Hwang

On the 1000 won you can find Toegye Yi-Hwang. He was a famous scholar during the Joseon Dynasty. He is known for being one of the best neo-Confucianism. His studies focused on how humans and relate to the overall universe. He created a new school of thought that focused on four components of good nature.

 

■ 5,000 won - Yulgok

 

"Yulgok" was the scholar who developed Neo - Confucianism in Joseon along with Toegye Yi-Hwang Hwang.  During his time he wrote a number of philosophical books that still play a major role in how Koreans think and live today.

 

■ 10,000 won - King Sejong

 

He is the fourth king of Joseon Dynasty, He created the Korean alphabet "Hangul". He developed the agriculture and scientific technology of Joseon Dynasty and is still regarded as a historic king due to its deep love for the people.

 

■ 50,000 won - Shin Saimdang

 

Shin Saimdang is also called the 'most representative woman of Joseon'. She was excellent in painting and left a lot of work behind. She was known to be a extraordinary mother and taught her children well. She is also the mother of Yulgok who is featured on the 5000 won.
